School Readiness: The Skills That Matter Most

Occupational Therapy September 25, 2026 1 min read brett@bmbinvestments.com, Speech-Language Pathologist

School readiness is more than knowing letters and numbers. It’s about helping children feel confident, capable, and comfortable in a classroom environment. At Cubs Corner, we look at the whole child — their motor skills, emotional skills, communication, and independence.

Key School Readiness Skills

Children thrive in early school settings when they have a strong foundation in:

  • Fine motor skills — using crayons, scissors, and small manipulatives
  • Self‑care independence — dressing, toileting, washing hands, and managing snacks
  • Emotional regulation — handling transitions, frustration, and group routines
  • Play and social skills — sharing, taking turns, and participating in group activities
  • Communication skills — expressing needs, asking for help, and engaging with peers
  • Motor planning and coordination — navigating playgrounds, moving safely, and participating in physical activities

These skills help children feel comfortable in structured environments and ready to learn.

When OT Can Help

Occupational therapy supports school readiness by strengthening the everyday skills children rely on in the classroom. Families often reach out when their child:

  • Has trouble sitting for short activities
  • Avoids fine motor tasks
  • Struggles with transitions or group routines
  • Needs extra support with self‑care
  • Has difficulty engaging in play with peers

Our team works closely with families to build confidence, independence, and joy in learning — creating a smooth transition into school life.

Wondering About Something You’re Seeing?
