Handwriting Readiness: What Really Matters Before the Pencil

Handwriting readiness starts long before a child picks up a pencil. At Cubs Corner, we focus on the foundational skills that help children feel confident, coordinated, and comfortable when writing becomes part of their daily routine.

What Handwriting Readiness Looks Like

Handwriting isn’t just about letters — it’s about the building blocks underneath. Children develop readiness through:

  • Fine motor strength — using crayons, play‑dough, tweezers, and small toys
  • Hand‑eye coordination — copying shapes, completing puzzles, and tracking lines
  • Postural stability — sitting upright comfortably during play
  • Bilateral coordination — using both hands together, like holding paper with one hand and cutting with the other
  • Grip development — exploring different grasps as their hands grow stronger

These skills grow through play — climbing, coloring, building, squeezing, and exploring. When children enjoy these activities, handwriting becomes much easier later on.

Signs a Child May Need Extra Support

Some children benefit from occupational therapy when they:

  • Avoid coloring or drawing
  • Fatigue quickly during table activities
  • Struggle to copy simple shapes
  • Use an awkward or painful pencil grasp
  • Have difficulty with hand strength or coordination

Our occupational therapists help children build these skills through playful, individualized activities that feel natural and fun. Families receive clear guidance and support every step of the way — always in your corner.

Wondering About Something You’re Seeing?

Every child’s development looks a little different. If you have a question, a concern, or simply want another perspective, we’re here to help you make sense of what you’re seeing and determine what comes next.
