Making Sense of Sensory Processing

Occupational Therapy September 25, 2026 1 min read brett@bmbinvestments.com, Speech-Language Pathologist

Sensory processing is how children take in and respond to the world around them — sounds, textures, movement, lights, and more. When sensory information feels “too big” or “too small,” everyday routines can become challenging. At Cubs Corner, we help families understand these patterns and support children with practical, compassionate strategies.

What Sensory Processing Is

Sensory processing involves how the brain organizes information from:

  • Touch
  • Movement
  • Sound
  • Sight
  • Smell
  • Taste

Some children seek more sensory input, while others avoid it. Both patterns are common and both can be supported.

Common Sensory Behaviors

Families often notice:

  • Sensory seeking — craving movement, crashing, jumping, or touching everything
  • Sensory avoidance — discomfort with loud noises, bright lights, certain clothing, or messy play
  • Movement sensitivity — fear of swings, slides, or climbing
  • Texture challenges — difficulty with clothing textures or certain foods

These behaviors are not “bad habits.” They’re clues about how a child experiences the world.

How OT Supports Sensory Processing

Occupational therapists help children feel more comfortable and confident by:

  • Creating individualized sensory strategies
  • Supporting regulation during daily routines
  • Building tolerance for challenging sensations
  • Strengthening motor skills that support sensory comfort
  • Coaching families with clear, practical tools

Our goal is to help children feel understood and successful and to help families feel supported, informed, and confident that they have someone in their corner.

Wondering About Something You’re Seeing?

Every child’s development looks a little different. If you have a question, a concern, or simply want another perspective, we’re here to help you make sense of what you’re seeing and determine what comes next.
