When parents think about kindergarten readiness, they often focus on academics: Can my child count to 20? Do they know their ABCs?
While those cognitive skills are wonderful, kindergarten teachers will tell you that a child’s physical and communication independence matters just as much. School requires a lot of physical stamina, fine motor control, and social communication.
Before your little one puts on their backpack, here are the hidden motor and speech milestones that will help them thrive in the classroom:
1. Fine Motor Independence (The OT Skills)
In kindergarten, your child will be asked to handle materials independently. Can they:
- Open their own lunchbox, unwrap a cheese stick, and open a juice box?
- Hold a pencil or crayon with a functional grip (rather than a full fist)?
- Use safety scissors to cut along a straight line?
- Manage their own clothing (zippers, buttons, snaps) when using the restroom?
2. Structural Strength & Balance (The PT Skills)
Sitting at a desk or circle time rug for extended periods requires surprising core strength. Look for:
- Postural Control: Can they sit upright in a chair without constantly slumping over, leaning on their neighbor, or sliding onto the floor?
- Playground Coordination: Can they confidently navigate stairs alternating feet, jump with both feet landing together, and keep up with peers during recess game tag?
3. Clear Communication (The Speech Skills)
Your child will need to advocate for themselves to a new adult and make friends with peers. Can they:
- Be understood by unfamiliar adults (like teachers and classmates) at least 90% of the time?
- Follow 2-to-3-step directions in a row (e.g., “Put your folder away, hang up your coat, and sit at your desk”)?
- Express their needs clearly, such as asking to use the restroom or explaining if they hurt themselves?
